Quaney Farms

A Long History

The challenges in agriculture are ever present and continue to require unique cooperation among a number of family members.  J. Martin Quaney (our patriarch) began family in the 1950s immediately after he and Nancy K. Corbett were married.  The original farm was rented in Lecompton KS, until the couple was able to acquire a farm in Burlingame KS.  Family runs deep for Quaney's and when the farm came available where J. Martin's brothers had already acquired and farms, the couple accepted the opportunity to buy the Adair Farm in the area.

J. Martin and Nancy Quaney were blessed with a large family.  They were generous with what they had, and more than just their natural children and grand-children were considered part of the family! They openly invited the challenges of present as deaths, marriages, divorces and re-marriages grew their number of "children and grandchildren".

J. Martin enjoyed the relationship with his 3 brothers, Joseph, Thomas and John and extended families of the four brothers continue to spend time together in the Burlingame area.

Brief Family History:

Our roots are in farming back to the last record Quaney Farms in the City of Ely in Wales, England.  There is still a Quaney Farms in Ely which is now a public park.  "QUANEA was another outlying portion of Holy Trinity parish. It was monastic property in 1279, (fn. 39) and a valued perquisite of the sacrist in 1335. Quaney hithe was the farthest downstream of the medieval city quays. At the Dissolution Quaney was granted to the dean and chapter. Early in the 19th century it was held on a chapter lease by the son of Bentham, historian of Ely. (fn. 41) A very ancient hall survived as a farmhouse until the mid19th century. A portion of the original farm had by that date been sold; the remainder was let, partly on lease and partly as copyhold of Stuntney manor..."

A visit with family members in Ireland reported the potato famine hit Quaney Farms of that era with some tragedy, and a number of the children began migrating to the America's. Passenger lists can be found from the mid-1800's forward in Ellis Island, although it is unclear which of these family members are direct descendants, but generally believe Peter, Jos and Thomas Quaney coming in to the USA in the 1850s and 1860s are direct lineage, although there was a report of a sister coming, which would likely be Julia Quaney in the 1890s.
